Surgery
As a pet owner, it can be difficult and stressful when your furry friend needs to undergo surgery. Whether it’s for a routine procedure or an emergency, you want to make sure that your pet is receiving the best possible care. This is where the expertise of a veterinary surgeon comes into play. A veterinary surgeon is a highly trained medical professional who preforms surgery on animals. At Blue Valley Animal Hospital, we have a team of veterinary surgeons who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for your pet.
When your pet requires surgery, it’s important to have a clear understanding of what will happen before and after the procedure.
Personalized Care
Our team will provide you with all of the necessary information, including what to do the night before the surgery, such as withholding food and a full schedule for the day of the procedure. We understand this can be an anxious time for you and your pet; we strive to make the process as straightforward as possible.
Before Your Pet’s Surgery
One of the most important parts of pet surgery is the pre-operative evaluation. This is where we assess your pet’s overall health, and If your pet requires anesthesia, we will perform blood work to make sure that they are healthy enough to undergo the surgery. This is an important step in ensuring the safety of your pet and the success of the procedure.
Pain Management
Pain management is important for the healing process of your pet. Each pet is different, our doctors will discuss and partner with you to create a plan that works best and allows your pet to heal as quickly as possible so they are back to normal as soon as possible.
Caring For Your Pet After Surgery
Post-surgery our medical team will provide you with written instructions on how to care for your pet. Our medical team will also discuss these steps with you during the discharge appointment. Our goal is to make sure both you and your pet are comfortable post-surgery. We are also available for questions and concerns once you arrive home should you need us.
At Blue Valley Animal Hospital, we are committed to providing the best possible care to your pet. Our team of veterinary surgeons has extensive experience in performing a wide range of animal surgeries, including but not limited to the following.
Spay/Neuter
Spaying or neutering your pet is an important decision for pet owners. Removing the male or female reproductive organs prevents unwanted pregnancies and reproductive cancers from threatening your pet's life. We offer spay and neuter surgery as part of your pet's preventative wellness care.
Feline Laser Declaw
The laser cauterizes the surgical area as it goes. This results in minimal-to-no bleeding and less post-op pain and swelling. The feline laser declaw preserves the entire foot pad, so your feline will be back to their normal routine in no time!
Soft Tissue
Our veterinarians are experienced in various soft tissue pet surgeries, the most routinely performed procedures being spay/neuters and mass/tumor removals. Other examples of veterinary soft tissue surgeries include intestinal foreign body removal, laceration and wound repair, eye surgery, splenectomy, and other specialized surgeries.
Bladder Stones
A cystotomy is usually recommended when a pet has bladder stones that cannot be removed by other means. Before surgery, your veterinarian may attempt to dissolve the stones with a prescription diet and/or a course of antibiotics. If this is unsuccessful, surgery will be recommended.
We understand that every pet is unique, which is why we take a personalized approach to veterinary surgery, tailoring our services to meet the specific needs of each individual animal.
